Happy Birthday - Make a wish

Some of God’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers”
~ Garth Brooks ~

In his hit country song, Garth Brooks tells a story of a man who encounters his high school flame years later when he is at an event with is wife. Reflecting back he remembers how he begged God for this high school fling to be his everlasting love, and he promised eternal gratitude if this prayer was granted. At that reunion, he saw how the woman he loved so deeply, who was now his wife would never have been in his life if that previous prayer had been answered the way he begged it at that time. In that moment he was genuinely grateful for his unanswered prayer.

Today is my birthday, and undoubtedly my friends will take this opportunity to make every old age joke they can remember. We will enjoy laughter over dinner and dessert. Someone will make sure the appropriate number of candles is lit on the chocolate cake, and a fire extinguisher is close at hand.

Ever since I was a child, at every birthday party I have attended, the ritual is for the birthday person to make a wish when blowing out the candles. I wonder how many people make wishes for things they absolutely desire. As a child I believe I did, and some of my wishes actually came true.

What if, everything you had every wished for over the smoke of a blown out candle actually came true for you?

Are there some of these wishes that you can be genuinely grateful for to
day because they didn’t come true?
